The WOMAN project
With assistance from the U.S. Department State’s Office of Global Women’s Issues – U.S. Embassy Philippines (US-SGWI/Embassy), will provide motivation for broader women participation and empowerment of women leaders. This two-year initiative aims to reduce poverty in Lanao del Norte by helping rural women create economic opportunities for themselves by development microenterprises and improving agricultural productivity.
These microenterprises have the potential to significantly improve the women’s household incomes and enhance their ability to provide better health, nutrition and educational opportunities to their families. In addition to alleviating poverty in the province, the project also aims to establish productive and peaceful bonds between Muslim and Christian women groups within Lanao del Norte.
Through the establishment of a federation of women’s rural cooperatives actively advocating for the benefit of women throughout the province, the project also seeks to establish productive, stable and peaceful bonds between women on either side of the cultural, religious and geographic divisions that have historically split Lanao del Norte province into Muslim and Christian communities starkly isolated from one another.
